On December 14th, Consuelo, Bill, Nancy, Pat, and Katy dispersed loans of $950 using our Kiva credit and gift cards. We made loans to 18 people in Cambodia, Philippines, Palestine, Tajikistan, Vietnam, Pakistan, Guatemala, El Salvador, the United States, Uganda, Peru, and Bolivia. The loans were for education, water filters, toilets, food production and sales, repair shops, farm animals and supplies, and sewing supplies.

In November, we discussed with Chuck Sparks the fact that we now have enough money coming to us in our loan paybacks that we no longer need new funds from the members of the Wellshire community. We asked Chuck to direct those dollars back to the Global Missions Committee and specifically the two medical clinics that Wellshire is helping build in Zimbabwe.

In 2017, the Kiva Microfinance Committee made 151 loans of $7529. The general Wellshire Kiva group made $18,575 in loans in 2017.

In 2018, Katy will turn over the chairmanship of the Microfinance committee to Curtis Roe. It continues to be a pleasure to serve on this committee.Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343930890372844710.post-8120303760128094342017-02-02T12:36:00.003-07:002017-02-02T12:36:54.358-07:00January 2017 RecapOn January 26, Curtis, Wes, Bob, Nancy, Pat and Katy met and reinvested $1,000 in loans. We made 20 loans to people in 14 countries, from Zimbabwe to Albania to Jordan to Nicaragua. One loan that was close to expiring was refunded, Katy went in and found another loan that was similar and funded it after the meeting.

At the meeting, Katy gave out some numbers from our lending activities in 2016. The committee made 139 loans totaling $7,250 in 50 countries. We discussed that while our account is well funded, the current political climate means our lending activity will likely become even more important as aid resources are pulled back. We encourage everyone to check in with their personal accounts and keep those payback dollars working.

Katy proposed that we move the March meeting to the 23rd to avoid being too early for our paybacks to have been credited to our account.
Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343930890372844710.post-44815265926081197852016-06-27T16:11:00.000-06:002016-06-27T16:11:37.446-06:00June 2016 RecapMay was an extremely busy month, and it was difficult to get the committee together to meet. Since we did not have much credit to re-lend, we decided to forgo the May meeting and do a digital meeting on June 23. Consuelo Bennett, Wes Smits, and Katy Fink-Johnson made seven $50 loans. Two of the loans were to new countries, Madagascar and Moldova.

The Wellshire Microfinance Committee, which invests monies given directly to it by members of the Wellshire community, has made 425 loans totaling $13,775 since September 28, 2011. On kiva.org, Team Wellshire Microfinance, made up of 58 members from the Wellshire greater community, has made a total of 2,036 loans totaling $55,725. That's 2,036 PEOPLE whose lives have been directly impacted. Two thousand thirty-six people who are one step closer to improved financial security and economic independence. We are deeply grateful to the Wellshire community for their continued generosity to this endeavor.

The committee will meet in person for its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, July 21 at noon at Wellshire.
Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343930890372844710.post-85328878076994071712016-04-14T16:18:00.002-06:002016-04-14T16:18:44.275-06:00March 2016 RecapThe Wellshire Microfinance Committee was snowed out of its March meeting, so we met by email instead. I thoroughly enjoy seeing the variety of loans our members are interested in funding, from water filters to compost, farming to education, men and women, young and old. We funded two experimental loans, one to Ham's Group in Cambodia, and one to Ivan in Uganda. Using the suggestions sent in by Wes Smits, Curtis Roe, and Beth Pannbacker, 27 loans were funded using $676.04 from the restricted fund.

The total number of loans for the entire team in March 2016 was 58. Former committee chair and devoted lender Wes Smits alerted me to the fact that the Wellshire Microfinance Team has made $51,400 in loans in its 4 1/2 years of existence. We celebrate the team members for their continued commitment and dedication to helping the world's poorest people make a better life for themselves.

The committee will meet in person on April 28, 2016 at noon at Wellshire Church to continue dispersing the funds received at the end of 2015.

At the close of 2015, over $3,000 in end-of-year gifts were designated for the Microfinance Committee. A discussion is ongoing about how best and how quickly to distribute these funds. $360 has been given to Club 45 for their next meeting.

The answer to the question about loans in South Africa is simple: there aren't very many field partners there directing loan recipients to Kiva. There are regularly loans available in South Africa, but we just aren't lucky enough to see them when they are there.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, March 24, 2016 at noon at Wellshire, not March 17 as was previously stated.
Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343930890372844710.post-75566248737530662682016-02-09T10:19:00.003-07:002016-02-09T10:19:24.188-07:002015: Year in ReviewIn 2015, the Kiva/Wellshire Microfinance committee funded 94 loans in 32 countries for $3,475. In attendance was Curtis Roe, Bill Strickland, Bob Britt, and Katy Fink-Johnson. We discussed what to do if shortly after we have a meeting a loan is refunded due to not being fully funded on the website. It was decided that Katy would search for a similar loan and reinvest that money rather than hold onto it for two months. During this meeting, the committee made its first ever loan to South Africa. This is because there are almost never any loans in South Africa on the Kiva website. Katy sent an email to Kiva to inquire as to why.

We made 9 loans to people in El Salvador, Mexico, Tajikistan, Samoa, Rwanda, Albania, and South Africa. Our next scheduled meeting is Thursday, March 17 at 12:00 pm.
Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343930890372844710.post-45679686998591713722015-11-04T15:44:00.003-07:002015-11-04T15:44:27.856-07:00November 2015: Presentations, Loans, New Ideas, Next MeetingOn Sunday, November 1, 2015, Wes Smits made a presentation about KIVA to approximately ten individuals during the adult study hour. For most in attendance, it was their first time hearing about the origins of microfinance, and then Wellshire's initial steps with KIVA.

As a demonstration about how easy it is to get involved, the group funded $25 to JUAN RAMIRO from Bolivia (a cobbler). He is buying cattle and a sewing machine. Repayments begin January 2016 thru March 2017. Katy has put information about this loan aside so that we may update the congregation on its progress.

An idea came up in the discussion: to fund an account (suggested $100) for each high school graduate through the Wellshire MicroFinance team. This would symbolize the graduate going out into the world, but still with connections to Wellshire, to do good things for others. An alternative would be to do this for the confirmation class.

Since August 26, 2015, the Wellshire Kiva team has funded 83 loans. Our recipients are 58% female and 42% male. The four countries that have received the most loans from the entire group are Kenya, Uganda, Philippines, and El Salvador. The team has made loans to 65 of 83 countries. The microfinance committee continues to avoid making loans to India but does not discourage individual members from doing so on their own.

The next meeting is Thursday, November 19, 2015, at noon. The Alternative Christmas Market is Sunday, November 22 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
We had a very productive session, using our loan payback money to make seven $50 loans. We lent money to people in El Salvador, Tajikistan, Timor-Leste, Haiti, Philippines, Colombia, and Myanmar. We then used $500 of the restricted funds to fund seven more loans to people in Vietnam, Haiti, Albania, Uganda, Cambodia, and El Salvador.

A motion was made to use the remaining money in the restricted account to purchase the gift cards to sell at the Alternative Christmas Market. Last year, a member of the committee purchased $250 worth of gift cards, some of which we sold, others we used to make loans at our meetings. People think this is an OK idea but only want to buy 5 instead of 10.

The Microfinance Committee has been asked to make a presentation during the Christian Education Hour at 9:55 am about what we do and where we spend our money. That presentation will be on Sunday, November 1.

Our next scheduled meeting is Thursday, November 19 at 12:00 pm at Wellshire.Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343930890372844710.post-13989381458336002092015-08-26T15:48:00.002-06:002015-08-26T15:48:52.995-06:00August 2015 RecapSince June 16, 2015, the members of the Wellshire Microfinance team have made 124 loans. In June, we had made 1,492 loans with a total amount lent of $38,925. Today we sit at 1,616 loans and $42,450 lent. Wow! That's a lot of dollars going out and coming back in. Our percentages are pretty consistent: 57% women, 43% men. We have lent to 65 of 83 countries, with the highest percentage going to Kenya, Uganda, Philippines, El Salvador, and Peru.

Katy has taken over the management of the Club 45 account.

At our last meeting, we took note of the APR some of the field partners are charging the borrowers. We will continue to discuss if we want to lend through these field partners. They lend to some of the most vulnerable people on the planet and so their expenses are high. It's hard to ignore the need of the borrowers even though it pains us to see them paying such high interest rates.

Our next meeting will be noon on September 17 at Wellshire. Hope to see you there. As always, feel free to e-mail in your loan suggestions. Maybe we could try and find a loan or two to countries we haven't lent to before. I know it's hard, there often aren't any. We had $372 to reinvest, and after learning we had $1,225 in the restricted fund, we decided it was time to add some new money to our loans. We dipped into the restricted fund for an additional $400 and used the remaining two $25 gift cards, funding 17 loans in 12 different countries. We discussed making our standard loan amount $50 since we are adding more money to the pool. Some loans which are less secure in their payback will still be for $25.

The group learned that some of the field partners seem to charge an exorbitant fee to the borrowers which we had not noticed before. Katy will be sending an e-mail to Kiva to find out more about this.

Our next scheduled meeting is Thursday, Sept 17 at noon at Wellshire.Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343930890372844710.post-49283365219523210052015-06-16T13:19:00.002-06:002015-06-16T13:21:56.659-06:00May 2015 UpdateOn May 21, we did a virtual meeting and funded 12 loans. One was immediately refunded because the loan window ran out, and one is in danger of expiring tomorrow. We are a little off the pace of last year's lending. In all of 2014 we loaned $13,725. As of right now, we have loaned $5,225. In the month of May, we made a total of 25 loans; for the month of June, we have made one.
We made 12 loans out of loan paybacks and used four gift cards to add new funds to our account. In total, the Wellshire Kiva group made 56 loans in January (as of January 28). A small group of us met on November 20 and distributed $450 into 17 new loans, all from loan payback money. We made one loan to a person in Nicaragua that we are going to track over the next few months to see what happens with it. The situation on the ground in Nicaragua is somewhat unfavorable for Kiva loans, but recent passing of laws may help stabilize things. Meanwhile, on their own, individual team members were busy! We currently stand at 1,265 loans totaling $32,900. We have already surpassed the loan totals for 2013. I'm excited to see where we end up for 2014!

$25 gift cards are still available for purchase. Just let Katy Fink-Johnson know if you would like to buy one.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, January 15 at noon at Wellshire Church.
Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343930890372844710.post-11740575121022913652014-10-28T15:09:00.001-06:002014-10-28T15:09:25.492-06:00Our Fourth Year Is Starting Out Strong! The Wellshire Microfinance Committee did not meet in October, but that doesn't mean our members haven't been busy! Since the end of September, WMF team members have made 42 loans for $1,050 on the Kiva website. I am so thankful for this group of dedicated individuals who continue to feel moved to help people around the world build a better life for themselves.

We will meet on Thursday, November 20 at noon at Wellshire and redistribute funds from loan paybacks to invest in new loans. We currently have $314 in loan paybacks, which I expect will increase a bit by the time we meet. Our members invested in 68 loans worth $1,725. We had loans made by our committee, the Pioneers, and Club 45, in addition to many loans made by individuals. Many thanks to all who contributed. It was a team effort.

September was also a transition month for WMF. Katy Fink-Johnson has graciously volunteered to take over as moderator. She brings energy, enthusiasm for microfinance, and dedication. I have no doubt that WMF will continue to grow under her leadership. Please support her in her new calling.

I am stepping aside after three years as moderator, but I intend to continue as an active member of WMF. It has been a blessing in my life to watch WMF grow into a viable organization in the fight against worldwide poverty. I want to personally thank all of you who helped WMF succeed.
We made seven loans worth $175. Our cumulative totals are now 1082 loans worth $28,175. That is not surprising, since July was a record month. Nonetheless, now might be a good time to check our portfolios for loan paybacks which we can invest in new loans. When you make a new loan, Kiva will automatically subtract your account balance from the cost of a new loan.

At our next meeting on Thursday,September 18, we will have a balance of at least $281 to invest in new loans. The balance will probably be much higher by that time. Everyone is welcome to join us at 12:00 pm at Wellshire Church for our meeting.

Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343930890372844710.post-32694257431958131662014-08-18T15:22:00.004-06:002014-08-18T15:22:59.654-06:00July Was a Record Month! After a slowdown in June, we stepped up in July with a record month for loans. Our members came through with 75 loans. At our meeting in June, we made 18 loans, all from loan paybacks. Our cumulative totals through July are 1,075 loans worth $28,000. Our members remain committed to helping the poor improve their economic circumstances. We are grateful for your continued efforts to supply a cup of cold water to those who live in poverty around the world.Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343930890372844710.post-21681724346526634822014-06-27T09:59:00.002-06:002014-06-27T09:59:18.226-06:00Summer is a bit slow...Since the beginning of May, lending has slowed down a bit. We have made 31 loans worth $775. We did not have a June meeting, so there will be over $300 in loan paybacks to invest at our July meeting on July 17. Currently, we have made 999 loans since the beginning less than 3 years ago. It will be a time of thanks when we pass 1,000 loans.Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343930890372844710.post-44991684872678330712014-05-02T13:17:00.003-06:002014-05-02T13:17:49.597-06:00Our Faithful MembersThe fact that we didn't hold a meeting in April did not slow down our members. Our investments totaled 49 loans worth $1,250. Our members took the initiative to invest without prompting. It's clear that we view KIVA as a very efficacious program to help fight poverty in the world. Since our start in September 2012, we have made a total of 968 loans worth $25,275. Thank you to all who participated. We pray for God's blessing on the people to whom we've made loans.Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8343930890372844710.post-53026239857856868122014-04-02T14:29:00.000-06:002014-04-02T14:29:02.101-06:00March was a very good month for Wellshire MicrofinanceBecause of some generous donations, our group was able to make 53 loans this month worth $1,375. In addition, the loans from donations plus loan paybacks and individual efforts, put us over 900 loans. Our cumulative totals are 919 loans worth $24,025. We are very grateful for everyone's efforts to keep Wellshire Microfinance making an impact.

At our April meeting on Thursday, April 17, we will continue to invest from our restricted funds and from our loan paybacks. It would be wonderful if we can hit 1,000 loans by September 28, which will be our third anniversary. We might even be able to make 1,000 loans in 1,000 days. What a blessing this opportunity is!

We made 18 loans (approx. $500). In addition, we made 6 loans from our loan paybacks. Curtis and I had to reassign seven loans on Friday because of problems with PayPal. PayPal did not let Kiva know what the $500 was to be used for, so Kiva assigned it to our credit account. Fortunately, 11 of our loans were still available, but we had to make substitutions for seven of our loans. We chose loans very similar to the ones we couldn't retrieve.

The 24 loans we were able to make pushed our cumulative total to 906 loans worth $23,625. Alleluia! We are on pace for another very good month.

Our group made 59 loans worth $1,625. We had investments made by a large number of our members. Our cumulative totals are now 866 loans worth $22,650. It's very gratifying to see that commitment to microfinance remains strong.

The prospects for March also look positive. We've already received word of six loans made by Club 45, our fourth and fifth grade group. Since February, 2012, Club 45 has made 26 loans under the direction of Holly Inglis and Dan Zuchegno. That's terrific!

In March, Wellshire Microfinance will concentrate on investing the donations in our restricted fund. Our next meeting will be on March 20 at 12:00 pm. We hope to see you there.

When we read about so much unrest in our world, it's good to know that we can do something positive to help the poor around the globe.Wellshire Churchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03297490337768839050noreply@blogger.com0
